Australia Emergency Number

Emergencies

In events of emergency, dial 000. This number is free to dial from all landlines and mobile phones in Australia. 000 will give you access to services such as the police, the fire brigade and the ambulance. Call 000 only in life-threatening situations such as crimes in progress and grave natural disasters. Do not use this number for jokes and for non emergency events such as when you're locked out, when you need directions or when you get a cold.

Hopefully you won't ever have to call 000, but if you do, what can you expect? Well, firstly it is very important to try and stay calm because you will need to talk clearly, listen carefully and give any information requested. Things the operator will probably need to know include your exact location and the emergency service/s needed.

After answering questions from the operator, help should arrive relatively quickly and you will need to wait patiently for it to arrive.  While waiting, you should try to stay calm and you should not attempt anything that may put anyone, including yourself in danger. When the emergency crew arrives it is best to leave them to work because they are well trained professionals.

Reporting non-emergency crimes

When non-emergency crimes happen, e.g. theft. It is advised to report to the police station nearby or you can dial the police helpline of your state. If you live in NSW, ACT, NT, SA, WA and Tasmania, you can call 131 444. Otherwise, report to the local police station if you live in any other states such as in Victoria and Queensland.
